David is presenting: How to Write a Blog Post

Why WordPress? Why do you like using WordPress? When I was first getting into Content Management Systems for publishing online content, WordPress seemed like the obvious choice for me. It was a platform that could be customized for any number of applications. But more importantly, it was backed by a dedicated community dedicated to improving it, and helping regular people use it. The Internet has revolutionized communication, and platforms like WordPress are helping enable people to more powerfully communicate their messages and experiences through technology
Why did you decide to speak at WordCamp Ottawa? For many years, I’ve been using the WordPress platform and participating in the WordPress community. What I’ve found is a community that strives to share its knowledge and experiences with each other in the spirit of making things better, and enabling other people to do and make great things.

It’s in this spirit that I want to bring my experience in writing blog posts to WordCamp Ottawa. I hope my presentation at WordCamp Ottawa can help teach people something new or provide a new perspective that will help inspire attendees.

What is your talk going to be about? Many things go into making a successful blog, but the quality of posts is something that keeps people coming back.

In this presentation, I will share with you some ways to come up with interesting blog topics, write for your audience, use the right tone, and kick your storytelling up a notch.

I want attendees to come away from the presentation with some new ways to approach writing a blog post, and createcontent that connects with readers

What is your favourite WordPress plugin or theme? Why? My current favourite plugin is nrelate, which lets you display related content on your site and others sites on your blogroll. I think there’s a tremendous opportunity to offer up pages and posts that someone will want to go to after finishing reading the page they’re on.

I have no doubt that the more time in general someone spends on your site, the more they’re interested in your messages and the more they trust you. Leading people to other related pages helps give them what they want without going off-site, and it helps you build a connection with visitors.

To accomplish this, the nrelate plugin can be placed at the end of a post and seamlessly lead the visitor to another related page or post. Nrelate helps keeps people interested.

Speaker Spotlight: Troy Chaplin

Troy is a WordPress designer, developer and enthusiast who enjoys pushing the envelope with each new project. With over 10 years of experience in a creative environment, Troy has dedicated his professional life to working with WordPress on several levels, helping a small team at Carleton University enhance their web presence and providing content editors around the university with intuitive tools to help promote their activities and initiatives.

Troy is presenting: An Introduction to Custom Post Types

I like WordPress for two reason. First, the community, who share and help each other constantly. I think that without such a strong community, WordPress would not be nearly as successful as what it is today. I also like WordPress because of its versatility and ease of use, both for content creators as well as developers.
Why did you decide to speak at WordCamp Ottawa? I’ve called Ottawa my home for over 10 years now and WordPress has been the key component of my professional life for over 5 years, what better reason to get involved in WordCamp Ottawa. In the future I would like to get more involved in both future WordCamp Ottawa events, as well as the Ottawa WordPress meet up to help educate people who have an interest in WordPress at any level.
What is your talk going to be about? My talk will be about the power of custom post types. A lot of people don’t know that you can create content areas outside of the standard posts and pages, and knowledge of this can help expand creativity and the thought process behind planning a site in WordPress.
What is your favourite WordPress plugin or theme? Why? It’s difficult to pick just one plugin to call my favourite, it depends on what the goals of the site are. A couple that come to mind immediately is Custom Field Template, which can be used in so many ways, from simple to advanced. Another would be Post2Post, which allows for the simple creation of relationships between posts.A couple others that I use on every site I build are WordPress SEO, Relevanssi and Gravity Forms.

Brian is presenting: Enhanced Social Media Marketing with WordPress

Why WordPress? Why do you like using WordPress? My team specializes in SEO, Internet marketing, web design and custom programming. We use WordPress in each of these respective areas for our clients on a daily basis. We have built countless websites using WordPress, not to mention a handful of plugins. Of all the different software products that we use, WordPress is one of the best. The product itself continues to improve with each version and the support community is unparalleled.
Why did you decide to speak at WordCamp Ottawa? WordPress has allowed my companies to expand in terms of clients and in-house projects. Speaking at WordCamp Ottawa provides the opportunity to give back to the community and organization.
What is your talk going to be about? In the past, I’ve given talks on using WordPress for SEO and social media marketing. Those were introductory talks that reviewed the important basics.  In this session, I’m going to take it a step further and try to get attendees to think a little more out of the box with respect to social media marketing. WordPress can be used for social media marketing far beyond a Facebook plugin and a Twitter feed in the sidebar. I’m going to emphasize a few important concepts for anyone who uses social media platforms for marketing and tie these ideas to different plugins that can help them achieve their objectives.
What is your favourite WordPress plugin or theme? Why? My favourite plugin changes from time to time but these days I’d say Yoast’s WordPress SEO plugin. It continues to impress me and is very helpful for search engine optimization.

Speaker Spotlight: Christine Rondeau

Former Chemist and University of Ottawa graduate, Christine became a web developer in 2001.  The early days of web development consisted of building custom made php-based CMS and Movable Type blogs. Like so many other developers, Christine gradually migrated towards WordPress and has been using it in almost every project since 2005. Christine teaches WordPress at a community college in Vancouver, BC, is a forums moderator at wordpress.org and an active member of the WordPress community.

Christine is presenting: Become a better WordPress developer by contributing and giving back to the community.

Why WordPress? Why do you like using WordPress? WordPress is easy to learn as a designer, developer and user. It’s very affordable and the community is amazingly generous.
Why did you decide to speak at WordCamp Ottawa? I’m from Ottawa. I haven’t been on campus since I left in 1991. Franky, I’m a wee bit anxious about coming back.
What is your talk going to be about? How, when one gives back, one gains enormously.
What is your favourite WordPress plugin or theme? Why? There are way too many plugins for one to be my favourite. Although recently I’ve been playing around with Advanced Custom Fields and it makes enhancing sites super-duper easy. I’ve been using the same theme since 2006. It’s my own starter theme which I’ve tweaked and refined based on others like starkers, blank, classic, 2010, and _s.
