It is the side conversations, the interesting discussions, the networking opportunities and the in-person connections you make which most often leave you feeling like a WordCamp is equal parts conference and community. The organizers of WordCamp Ottawa were equally accommodating and enthusiastic in accepting my talk topic &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/2019.ottawa.wordcamp.org\/session\/humans-in-hallways-getting-help\/\">Humans in hallways getting help<\/a> \u2013 that aims to help prime the proverbial conversational pump for the hallway track of WordCamp Ottawa 2019. I was quite appreciative that they offered this blog post to help me help you get the most out of the experience in some new and novel ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What are your Hallway\nTrack Topics of Interest?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/2019.ottawa.wordcamp.org\/files\/2019\/06\/image001.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1036\" width=\"293\" height=\"196\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ottawa.wordcamp.org\/2019\/files\/2019\/06\/image001.png 545w, https:\/\/ottawa.wordcamp.org\/2019\/files\/2019\/06\/image001-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/ottawa.wordcamp.org\/2019\/files\/2019\/06\/image001-449x300.png 449w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 293px) 100vw, 293px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Before July 10<sup>th<\/sup>, go to <a href=\"http:\/\/wordcamp.gravityflow.io\/ottawa-2019\">http:\/\/wordcamp.gravityflow.io\/<\/a> to share up to 3 topics that you are most interested to learn about and up to 3 that you have the most experience\/knowledge to share with others. Keeping the theme of 3 going, this info will be put to good use in the following 3 ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It will be printed out in advance of the\nconference sized for a spot on your registration badge. This will give everyone\nan easy ice breaker to new conversations with new people where your skills \/\ninterests overlap. Fear not if you\u2019re reading this after July 10<sup>th<\/sup>,\nthe badge will have space to write-in your own topics of interest.<br>\n<br>\n<\/li><li>It will help me know what topics are of most\ninterest to most amount of attendees to group up some speed networking topics\nfor the <a href=\"https:\/\/2019.ottawa.wordcamp.org\/session\/humans-in-hallways-getting-help\/\">2<sup>nd<\/sup>\nhalf of my presentation<\/a>. That also means, for those who show up to my\nsession, Saturday 1PM in Manotick room, you\u2019ll be able to put face to name of\npeople with related interests to keep an eye out for the rest of the\nconference.<br>\n<br>\n<\/li><li>Are you really hoping to connect about a\nspecific topic during the WordCamp, but not sure who to ask? Stop by the <a href=\"https:\/\/gravityflow.io\" rel=\"nofollow\">Gravity Flow<\/a> booth in the sponsor area! You\nwill be able to see\/search for attendees by topic that you may want to connect\nwith (of those who agree their contact info can be shared at least). You also\ncan see how easy it was to use <a href=\"https:\/\/gravityforms.com\">Gravity Forms<\/a>,\n<a href=\"https:\/\/gravityflow.io\" rel=\"nofollow\">Gravity Flow<\/a> and the related suite of\nadd-ons to put it together. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Since this blog post is coming out a few weeks ahead of the\nconference, I figured it makes sense to share a few of the hallway track tips\nthat relate most to things to do or mindset as you prepare to attend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t be afraid of\nthe elephant in the room<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/2019.ottawa.wordcamp.org\/files\/2019\/06\/image002.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1035\" width=\"155\" height=\"155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ottawa.wordcamp.org\/2019\/files\/2019\/06\/image002.png 411w, https:\/\/ottawa.wordcamp.org\/2019\/files\/2019\/06\/image002-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/ottawa.wordcamp.org\/2019\/files\/2019\/06\/image002-300x300.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 155px) 100vw, 155px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, organizers have put a lot of work\ninto crafting a schedule for you and yes speakers are hard at work putting\nquality content into their session\/slides. But don\u2019t feel bad if every session\ndoesn\u2019t feel like it is meant for you. There are a wide range of technical\nskills and areas of interest that a WordCamp tries to cover. If a slot of\nsessions don\u2019t seem to scratch your itch that is a great time to check out the\nhallway track. Chances are others in the hallway at that time might be ones\nyou\u2019d really enjoy meeting. All sessions and slides will make their way up to <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.tv\">wordpress.tv<\/a> after whereas the hallway track\nwill not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Check out attendee list in advance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/2019.ottawa.wordcamp.org\/attendees\/\">The attendee page on the WordCamp\nOttawa page is one to watch<\/a>! You can see the websites of your fellow attendees, add them to your\ntwitter feeds and figure out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/2010\/04\/20\/how-to-remember-names-entrepreneurs-human-resources-remember-names_slide.html#7633642969b5\">mnemonic device(s)<\/a> you might use when it comes time to\nintroduce yourselves. Or re-introduce yourself to people you have seen\/heard\nbut haven\u2019t properly met before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Practice Pacman<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls src=\"https:\/\/www.ericholscher.com\/_downloads\/067bf3c9b069c394948b32115a08cf6b\/the-pac-man-rule.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Simply stated, \u201cWhen standing as a group of people, always\nleave room for 1 person to join your group.\u201d More memorably, stand like Pac-Man\n\/ Ms. Pac-Man! This encourages other people to enter into the space and join\nthe conversation. Don\u2019t forget that a Pac-Man has to open his\/her mouth wider\nfor yet more people to join \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Default to listening<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On any given topic, you may very well be the smartest person\nin the room, but a WordCamp isn\u2019t the place to try and show out \/ try to prove\nit. By defaulting to listening, you increase your own chances to learn and will\noften find the opportunities for a more engaging conversation flow forth.
